Video #1 Brain Breaks – Uppers and Downers
Brain breaks are short and simple physical and/or mental exercises designed to manage the physiology and attention of a group and to keep learners in the most receptive state possible for further learning. In this video we explore the benefits of brain breaks to foster calm and self-management and boost active learning engagement. Brain Breaks can either stimulate the nervous system and function as “uppers” OR activate the relaxation response and be calming “downers”. Any brain break that uses repetitive patterned movement, focus and mindfulness, stretching or deep breathing will be calming. While brain breaks virtually no preparation or extra materials to perform, it is important to establish norms for a clear and smooth transition back into engaged learning.
