Resilience can be nurtured and collectively shared throughout the school community.

When organisational culture and practices are healthy and supportive we all have a chance to flourish professionally. A heathy and thriving school climate provides the optimal environment for each and every educator to flourish.

It’s a joy to work in a school in which with understanding and supportive leadership who inspire supports each educator to make the very best of their talents. In this context, the school climate (the culture, operations, relationships and environment) plays a critical role in an educator’s capacity to either flourish or feel thoroughly overwhelmed.

While often the onus is on the individual themselves, in reality, the school climate, collegial relationships and daily practices play a critical role in staff wellbeing. The Resilient School helps create a school-wide response to boost resilience for the individual and also embed operational practices and structures, collegial interactions and a team culture that prioritise staff wellbeing and resilience.

The Resilient School program forges collective resilience through 4 key steps:

1. Widen the collective Window of Tolerance

Using Reboot’s 3 Brains we apply a whole-brain lens to wellbeing in Reboot’s Thriving @ Work 4-Level Matrix and institute awareness, practices and norms at the individual, collegial, operational and culture levels to proactively widen the Window of Tolerance.

2. Ensure self and co-regulating become the norm

Establish clear and explicit self- and co-regulation systems to encourage self- and co-regulation among peers. Providing training and opportunities to repetitively use a process that includes somatosensory, relational, space or top-down self-regulation enhances both immediate stress management and builds a skill set underpinning personal resilience.

3. Identify and reduce sources of stress

Identify the current problems and sources of stress unique to a specific school’s context (e.g. remote, serving a transgenerational traumatised community or multi-generation welfare dependence, reporting periods, experiencing successive leadership changes, acute crisis etc.) and actively work to minimise or reduce these sources of stress. Regain a sense of control and agency by devising plans to better manage those that cannot be avoided.

4. Accumulate resilience

Resilience is more than coping well with acute and chronic stressors when they do arise. Resilience also assumes a strategic and resourceful adaptation to circumstances to make the most of a challenge and potentially improve overall practices through growth. Reflect on the learning arising when effectively coping with challenges and how daily practices might be modified to further enhance resilience.

The Resilient School helps:

  • Boost social capital levels and create a well connected and considerate school community
  • Foster a solutions-orientated and growth mindset that encourages individuals to actively address problems and innovate
  • Establish formal self- and co-regulation systems for use throughout the day
  • Support individuals to be more self-aware and motivated to manage their stressors effectively
  • Employ a whole-brain lens to leadership and daily operations
  • Address and/or better manage current sources of stress at work

The Resilient School module is divided into 6 sections complete with videos, resources and action plans to help practically foster resilience throughout your school.
