Module 2.1: Introducing the Cycle of Change in young people

This video explores the Cycle of Change (from pre-contemplation through to maintenance and relapse) as it pertains to work with children, young people and families and working toward trauma transformative practices. Each phase is discussed and the importance of preparing young people adequately for success by minimising and addressing the likelihood of self-sabotage and slips.

Collaborative Questions:

  • Are the young people you work with at a pre-contemplative or contemplative stage? Where are their families at?
  • What are the outcomes of mismatching your support strategies with an individual’s stage in the Cycle of Change? Have you experienced this in your work? What were the signs of that mismatch?
  • How might you prepare for a young person to engage in the action phase? How long might this take for some?
  • How do you prepare in advance to minimise the impact and length of time that a young person spends in relapse?
