Module 2.2: What’s really going on? Problem formulation and ownership

When working with individuals to foster positive change it is essential to define concerns at a causal level (as much as possible) and gather base-point data. This video introduces tools that can be used with children and young people in support of problem formulation and trigger identification.

Collaborative Questions:

  • Do the children and young people that you work with define their concerns and ‘problems’ differently to the adults around them?
  • Are you able to define and address the root cause of behaviours?
  • Why is it important to define triggers and their quantity? Consider breaking the Cycle of Reactivity and also tasks in the pre-contemplative and contemplative stages of the Cycle of Change.
  • How might you use things like the Feelings Tracker to help a young person better understand cause and effect and map their triggers?
